Bannerlord uses a new mechanic revolving around a clan system, unlike previous Mount & Blade games. Every lord is attached to a certain group known as a clan, and you create yours when starting
Make a new Group Cavalry and Horsearcher then disband it again and all your troops are again in the right Formation. You actually don't have to do anything with the slider. Just create a new cavalry formation and remove it again immediately by clicking the + symbol. It's a bug, you're not missing anything. One of the best ways to get a powerful companion in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord is through marriage. Nobles are usually high-level characters with unique personalities, and they can help you grow your clan and take different roles, from leading parties to governing your towns and cities .

This issue is is keeping me from playing the game. Finding companions to add to your warband and seeking out lords (especially rulers) are core parts of the game; and trying to find these NPCs using guess-and-check is untenable given the scale of the map.

When I started the game, I set it up to auto allocate perks for my companions. Now that IO understand the game better, I'd like to change that, but I don't see it in the options menu.
